Collection: Dark Red & Black Roses
Dark Red & Black Roses bring dramatic colour, elegance and sophistication to UK gardens. From velvety crimson blooms and rich burgundy petals to roses so dark they appear almost black, these distinctive varieties create striking displays in borders, rose beds and floral arrangements.
Although naturally pure black roses do not exist, certain varieties develop exceptionally deep red, wine-red and burgundy shades. Their colours can change with temperature, sunlight and flower maturity, making every bloom particularly fascinating.
Discover dark red and near-black roses
Our collection includes some of the most distinctive dark-coloured garden roses, each offering its own combination of colour, flower form and character.
Black Baccara is admired for its luxurious, velvety petals in exceptionally dark burgundy shades, often creating an almost-black appearance.
Black Magic produces elegant, deep red Hybrid Tea flowers with rich crimson and burgundy tones, making it an excellent choice for dramatic rose beds and cutting gardens.
Eddy Mitchell offers an unusual colour combination, with dark red, nearly black petals contrasted by golden-yellow reverses.
Red Berlin adds classic crimson-red colour with large, beautifully shaped flowers and an elegant upright growth habit.
Many of these varieties belong to the Hybrid Tea group, valued for their large, high-centred blooms and excellent suitability for cutting. Discover more elegant varieties in our Hybrid Tea Roses collection.
Burgundy and deep purple roses
Not all dark-coloured roses are deep red. Some varieties develop rich wine, plum and burgundy-purple tones, offering a different interpretation of dark garden roses.
Burgundy Ice, for example, produces clusters of deep burgundy-purple flowers that create a beautiful contrast against green foliage.

Dark red and bicolour roses
Some roses combine dark red petals with contrasting colours, creating particularly striking flowers.
Eddy Mitchell is an excellent example, with velvety dark red petals and contrasting golden-yellow reverses. This unusual combination makes it a distinctive choice for gardeners looking for something beyond traditional red roses.

Where to plant dark red and black roses
Dark red, crimson and burgundy roses work beautifully in both traditional and contemporary UK gardens.
Their intense colours create particularly attractive combinations with:
-
white and cream roses
-
soft pink flowers
-
lavender and purple perennials
-
silver-grey foliage
-
ornamental grasses
-
pale yellow and apricot flowers
These roses are ideal for creating focal points in mixed borders, formal rose beds and romantic cottage gardens.
For maximum visual impact, consider planting dark-coloured roses against lighter backgrounds where their rich petal colours can be appreciated.
Dark red roses for cutting
Many dark red Hybrid Tea roses are excellent for cutting, thanks to their large flowers, elegant form and upright stems.
Varieties such as Black Baccara, Black Magic and Red Berlin can create striking bouquets and sophisticated indoor displays.
Dark burgundy blooms combine particularly well with cream, white and pale pink flowers, making them attractive choices for contrasting floral arrangements.
How to care for dark red roses
Most dark-coloured garden roses perform best in a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil and good air circulation.
Water thoroughly during dry periods, particularly while young plants are becoming established. Feed during active growth with a suitable rose fertiliser and remove faded flowers from repeat-flowering varieties to encourage further blooms.
Flower colour can vary naturally with growing conditions. Some dark red and burgundy roses develop their deepest shades during cooler weather, while stronger sunlight may change the intensity of their colouring.
